Scope and content:

The collection contains approximately 40 diaries of John R. Hauf, President of the John R. Hauf Furniture Store on Central Avenue, Albany NY. The early journals cover his early years as well as his time serving in France during World War I. Later journals appear to have been used as yearly date books as well as a place to record daily happenings. The collection also includes an account ledger, some letters as well as transcriptions by June Howe of the early journals from 1913 to November of 1915.

Journals are in chronological order from 1913 to 1980. A few miscellaneous items are organized at the end of the collection, specifically the transcriptions, a ledger and a photo.

Biographical / historical:

Born on May 28, 1896, John R. Hauf began his journaling in May of 1913 and continued writing almost every day through 1980. He married Anne E. Hauf and was the President of John B. Hauf Furniture Store on Central Avenue in Albany NY. His daughter, June Howe began transcribing his numerous journals and later donated the originals and her transcriptions to the Albany Institute to add to the collection. John R. Hauf passed away in January of 1982.
