The Dale Riepe Papers contains forty years of correspondence (1946-1986), included in Series I. The correspondence documents Riepe's academic and professional life, in the United States, as well as his education and teaching experience in India and Japan. Series II, Department Papers consists of Riepe's Departmental and Committee work within the University at Buffalo's Philosophy Department. Series III, Professional Papers covers philosophy conferences and professional organizations. Series IV, Publications consists of five of Riepe's important publications including drafts, notes, and related correspondence. Series V, Subject Files consists of Riepe's related subject materials, and includes photographs and correspondence with other writers such as David DeGrood, Lewis Mumford, and John C. Plott. Series VI, Children and Family Life includes artwork, school work, and scrapbooks created by Riepe's two daughters.

Dale Maurice Riepe was a Professor of Philosophy at the University at Buffalo from 1963 to 1986. He was Chairman of the Department of Social Sciences from 1963 to 1965. In 1964 he was named the first associate dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Prior to Buffalo, Riepe taught at the universities of North Dakota, South Dakota, Michigan, as well as at C. W. Post College where he was Associate Director of Humanities.
Riepe's research interests were in Eastern philosophies, particularly of India and Japan. He traveled extensively throughout his academic career having received a Graduate Fulbright Award to India in 1951 and a Fulbright Lectureship at the University of Tokyo in 1957. Riepe also taught as an exchange professor in the former Soviet Union and in China and served as a consultant to the Institute of Science, Technology, and Development in New Delhi, India.
Riepe published over seventy articles, making significant contributions to both Indian and American philosophies. He was editor of Chinese Studies in Philosophy and of Chinese Studies in History. Among his published books are The Naturalist Tradition in Indian Thought (1961), The Structure of Philosophy (co-editor, 1966), The Philosophy of India and Its Impact on American Thought (1970), and Phenomenology and Natural Existence: Essays in Honor of Marvin Farber (editor, 1973). Riepe also tried his hand at fiction and published a novel, The Owl Flies by Day in 1979.
